PK064+05.1 – Campbell’s Hydrogen Star

PK064+05.1 is a very young planetary nebula located in the constellation Cygnus. It is widely known in astronomy as Campbell’s Hydrogen Star, or BD+30 3639. It is distinguished by its Wolf-Rayet central star, which is violently expelling its outer layers of gas. Through a telescope it displays a striking deep-red colour due to its strong hydrogen emission. It also produces a curious blinking effect, in which the gaseous envelope appears to emerge and disappear depending on how it is observed.
