M 81 (Bode’s Galaxy) and M 82 (Cigar Galaxy)
M 81, on the right, has a very bright nucleus and well-defined spiral arms rich in young stars and star-forming regions. Its proximity to M 82 has caused gravitational interactions that have affected its structure. M 82, on the left, has an elongated, irregular appearance with highly visible regions of dust and gas. It undergoes intense star-forming activity that generates powerful galactic winds visible with advanced telescopes.
