M81 (Bode’s Galaxy) and M82 (Cigar Galaxy)
M81, on the right, has a very bright nucleus and well-defined spiral arms rich in young stars and star-forming regions. Its proximity to M82 has caused gravitational interactions that have affected its structure. M82, on the left, has an elongated, irregular appearance with highly visible regions of dust and gas. It undergoes intense star-forming activity that generates powerful galactic winds visible with advanced telescopes.
