CTB 1 – Medulla Nebula
CTB 1, with the Galactic designation SNR G116.9+0.2, is an evolved and extremely faint supernova remnant in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is also known as the Medulla Nebula and by the identifiers PN A66 85, VRO 62.23.01 and LBN 576. It is a mixed-morphology remnant: a filamentary shell is visible at optical and radio wavelengths, while its interior contains hot X-ray-emitting gas. Its structure is not completely closed; towards the north-east it displays a breakout region, probably formed when the expanding shock wave reached a lower-density area of the interstellar medium. Its ICRS (J2000) coordinates are RA 23 h 59 min 13.0 s and Dec +62° 25′ 12.0″. It was formerly included as Abell 85 in a catalogue of planetary nebulae, but was later shown to be a supernova remnant. It should not be confused with the Abell 85 galaxy cluster in the constellation Cetus, at approximately RA 00 h 42 min and Dec −09° 19′, which belongs to the Abell catalogue of galaxy clusters. Its possible association with the high-velocity pulsar PSR J0002+6216 is particularly interesting: the pulsar's long tail points approximately towards the centre of CTB 1, suggesting that it may have been ejected during the same explosion.
